Chapter 13
I pushed the call forwarding button on my office phone to send everything to voicemail. My cell phone was off and so was the other one that only Tiffany had the number to, and that cell phone was safely tucked away in a bottom drawer of my desk. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to talk to Tiffany, it was the fact that Emily was helping me out around the office today.
Emily had taken the day off of work to go to an event at our kid’s schools, and since that only took up her morning; she told me that she wanted nothing more than to help around my office. I sent Geneva home early. Emily and I were having a nice day, it had been a while since she spent anytime around the office.
Emily was doing some light filing, organizing some client and prospect folders when she picked up one and turned to me. “You brought on another Roby as a client, baby?” she asked.
My head jerked up. “What?” I asked, a little sharper than I intended to. Then I saw the file folder in her hand.
“I said I see you have another client with the last name Roby,” she said slowly as if I had a problem understanding her.
“Oh yes, um, had that for a bit now,” I said, “His niece is buying some stuff up right now around town. Nice young lady, I’ll have to introduce you two sometime.” I kept the tone cool and professional, no need to bring on more questions than necessary.
“Is she just an investor like Tyrone?”
“She owns spas, she has a couple of shops in Detroit. Speaking of which, I’m going to have to call her, I think she is trying to sell her property there.”
“This folder for Mike Banks, do you want it filed in with these?” Emily asked, turning her attention elsewhere. I was glad that we veered off the subject of Tiffany Roby, Client.
“You can put Mike’s folder on Geneva’s desk, it’s just receipts.”
Emily continued working away and I sat at my desk completing some other tasks. This felt nice, I noted to myself, this familiar rhythm, it was comforting. Emily started talking about her time at the school this morning and some of the updates that she had received from our kids teachers. She told me that Chris Jr. was excelling in math and reading. She spoke with such pride, she was a wonderful mother.
“How is his lunch period going?” I joked, “He should be getting an A in that subject.”
“Don’t make fun of him honey, that’s not nice,” Emily chided. She stole a sideways glance at me. “If you do, you won’t be getting any tonight.”
“Now wait a minute,” I said, smiling at her, “I swear I take it all back.”
Emily laughed. “The kids are fine, I gave Shalonda some pizza and movie money and she’s picking them up from school, so you are all mine.” She pulled the next stack of files closer to her.
“Shoot
